Australia Boasts the ‘Most Livable’ Cities in the World

August 7, 2013

If you are considering immigration to Australia, you will be happy to hear that Australia boasts several of the “most livable” cities in the entire world! This has helped to make Australian immigration one of the top choices for foreign nationals around the globe, with approximately 200,000 people approved for immigration to Australia every year.

In August 2012, the respected London-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) evaluated 140 cities around the globe, based upon five key criteria (culture and environment, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and stability), assigning each city a “livability” score which ranged from a low of zero to a high of 100. The EIU analysts ranked Melbourne, Australia, to be the #1 “Most Livable City in the World” (the second year in a row) giving this multicultural metropolis a near-perfect score of 97.5. Melbourne wasn’t the only Australian city to make EIU’s 2012 “Global Livability Survey” Top 10 List, as Adelaide tied with Calgary, Canada, for sixth place with an impressive score of 96.6; Sydney was rated as the seventh “Most Livable City in the World” with a score of 96.1; and Perth came in 9th place with a score of 95.9. Another Australian city, Brisbane, was ranked by the EIU as the 20th “Most Livable City in the World.”

A different evaluation in 2012 by the human resources firm Mercer rated 221 cities around the globe based on its “Quality of Living Index” and assessed Sydney to be tied with Bern, Switzerland, for 10th place; Melbourne tied with Hamburg, Germany, for 17th place; Perth came in #21; Canberra was ranked in 26th place; and Adelaide was considered to have the 29th highest quality of living in the world. Quality of life factors considered by the Mercer analysts included: availability of consumer goods; economic environment; housing; medical and health considerations; natural environment; political and social environment; public services and transportation; recreational options; schools and education; and socio-cultural environment.

Although Mercer evaluated and ranked Australian cities a bit differently than the EIU, both highly-respected assessments shared a common conclusion – Australia is one of the best places in the world to live! Thus, if you are seeking better opportunities and a high standard of living in some of the most incredible cities on Earth, you may want to apply for Australian immigration!
