Good things are happening in Melbourne, Australia! In two recent surveys, Australia’s “cultural capital” of Melbourne was named as the “friendliest” city in the world, as well as the “most livable city” on Earth.
In the 2014 Reader’s Choice Survey conducted by Conde Nast Traveler magazine, Melbourne tied with Auckland, New Zealand, as the world’s “friendliest” city. Melbourne also received high marks for being both “cool” and yet “classy,” having excellent eateries and top-notch hotels, possessing beautiful parks, amazing art, and boasting a “happening” night life. In addition to being considered friendly, residents of Melbourne were also admired for their good sense of humor (which is often associated with being friendly).
Having a friendly population is just one aspect of Melbourne – Australia’s second largest city (population 4.25 million) – that has attracted new residents and made it the fastest growing city in the country. Melbourne was also ranked in August 2014 as the #1 “Most Livable City in the World” for the fourth year in a row by the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in its annual survey of 140 major cities around the globe. This was, of course, good news for Melbourne residents and city officials. As the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Robert Doyle, declared, “To be named the world’s most livable city for four consecutive years is a great honor and a testament to the enviable lifestyle that Melbourne’s offers.”
It should be noted that Melbourne is not the only “friendly” or “livable” city in Australia. Sydney was named as the world’s fifth friendliest city in the 2014 Reader’s Choice Survey and was ranked by the EIU as one of the top 10 most livable cities in the world for 2014, along with the Australian cities of Adelaide and Perth. Australia truly is one of the most amazing countries on Earth and, therefore, it is not surprising that thousands of people from around the globe want to move to Australia. For the 200,000 eligible foreign nationals who are approved for Australian immigration each year, that dream to move to Australia actually becomes a reality!
