The 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was published August 15, 2016, and for the first time in history, six of Australia’s 39 universities were listed among the 100 best universities in the world.
According to the ARWU evaluation, Australia’s six top universities for 2016 are: #1 University of Melbourne (#40 in the world); #2 University of Queensland (#55 in the world); #3 Australian National University (#77 in the world); #4 Monash University (#79 in the world); #5 University of Sydney (#82 in the world); and #6 University of Western Australia (#96 in the world).
Only #1 United States and #2 United Kingdom have more universities listed in the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) top 100 best universities than #3 Australia.
Furthermore, the ARWU included 23 of the 39 universities in Australia in the top 500 best universities in the world for 2016, which placed Australia in fifth place overall among countries with the highest rated institutions of higher education.
