Several of the largest cities in Australia have once again been listed among the world’s best places to live. In August 2015, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released its annual assessment of 140 cities around the globe and for the fifth year in a row, Melbourne was ranked as the #1 Most Livable City in the World! Other major Australian cities were also listed among the top places on the planet to live, with Adelaide ranked #5, Sydney #7, Perth #8 and Brisbane #18 out of the 140 cities evaluated.
The EIU researchers made their assessments of each city based on 30 quantitative and qualitative factors that were grouped into five major categories: (1) stability; (2) healthcare; (3) culture and environment; (4) education; and (5) infrastructure. Cities received an overall score that ranged from a low of 0 to a perfect score of 100. Melbourne came close to a perfect score with 97.5, while Adelaide received a high score of 96.6, Sydney was given 96.1, Perth was rated at 95.9 and Brisbane scored 94.2 on the EIU livability scale. Although Melbourne received the highest overall score from the EIU researchers, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth all had perfect scores of 100 on the same three major livability categories: healthcare, education and infrastructure. Adelaide was given a perfect score of 100 for healthcare and education, while Brisbane was awarded a perfect score of 100 for healthcare.
